Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Our Focus

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a research supported therapy that balances acceptance and validation of clients with change strategies in problem-solving. DBT training was designed to address Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and problems faced by “highly sensitive” persons. DBT training targets the following problem areas:

  • Heightened emotional sensitivity
  • Quick and intense emotional reactions
  • Slow returns to normal mood
  • Chronic problems with depression, anxiety, anger or anger expression

  • Suicide threats or attempts
  • Self-harm behaviors such as cutting or burning
  • Impulsive behaviors such as binge-purge eating, substance abuse, high-risk sexual activity, gambling or excessive spending
  • Engage frantic efforts to keep relationships, out of fear of abandonment, that ultimately fail

  • Extreme black-or-white/all-or-nothing thinking
  • Difficulty making decisions and solving problems
  • “Detached” thinking including mild inattention and episodes of severe dissociation
